The Beauty and Versatility of Handmade Macrame Jewellery

Macrame jewellery is a wonderful craft that brings together art, history, and style. It is made by knotting cords or threads into beautiful designs. Each piece is handmade, which makes it special and unique. Let’s explore why macrame jewellery is so amazing.

The History of Macrame

The art of macrame has been around for centuries! It started long ago in the 13th century with Arab weavers. They would knot the loose threads on the edges of their fabrics to create beautiful patterns. Over time, this technique spread to Europe and other parts of the world.

By the 19th century, macrame became very popular in Europe. People used it to make decorations, clothes, and even jewellery. Queen Victoria was thought to have patronized the craft and I feel that could be one of the reasons why this craft came to India as well. The word “macrame” comes from the Arabic word “migramah,” which means fringe or decorative trimming. Today, macrame is still loved for its intricate and artistic designs.

Macrame as Jewellery

While macrame was traditionally used for bigger items like wall hangings and curtains, it eventually became a way to make jewellery. By using thin cords and small beads, artists started creating handmade necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and anklets. This change happened in the 20th century when people wanted more natural and boho-style accessories.

I personally love using all kinds of elements in my macrame creations - be it beads of different kinds, stones, kundan elements, and brass elements. I find macrame really liberating and versatile in that it does not restrict raw material use in any way (as far as I have found!!)

Macrame jewellery stands out because it can be simple or very detailed. Artists can use different types of knots to create unique patterns, and they often add beads, shells, or stones to make their designs even more special. The jewellery can be made with natural fibres like cotton, hemp and jute and synthetic fibres like nylon and polyester. Each fibre has its pros and cons and can be used by a macrame expert to showcase its full beauty.

Why Macrame Jewellery Is Popular Today

Today, macrame jewellery is loved all over the world, especially in India. Many people enjoy wearing eco-friendly jewellery because it feels personal and unique. Macrame jewellery fits perfectly with this trend because each piece is crafted by hand and no two pieces are exactly the same.

In India, macrame jewellery has become popular because it matches both traditional and modern outfits. You can wear a macrame necklace with a saree or pair a bracelet with jeans and a t-shirt. It’s versatile and works for any occasion.

This is one of the best-selling designs that I created 2 years back and now I have it in 4 different colours. Thank you Mehndi and Christina for the amazing photos.

Another reason why macrame jewellery is loved today is that it can be eco-friendly. While some artists use natural fibres like hemp and cotton, at The Yarn Artisan Store, I use nylon or polyester cords, which not only provide durability but also allow for intricate and lasting designs and great finish. I principally use non-waxed cords even though they are a bigger investment because they possess greater shine and give wonderful definition to the knots. These materials make the jewellery sturdy enough to be worn daily without losing its charm.

Conclusion

Handmade macrame jewellery is a beautiful blend of history, art, and fashion. It started as a practical craft but has grown into an elegant and versatile way to express yourself. In today’s world, especially in India, macrame jewellery is celebrated for its uniqueness and durable nature. Whether you wear it or buy it, macrame jewellery is truly something to treasure.
